The City of Massillon, in partnership with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), is planning improvements at two intersections: State Route (SR) 21/Lake Avenue and 1st Street/Lake Avenue.

 

Following a review of the traffic analysis and public feedback, Alternative 2 has been selected as the preferred alternative. Alternative 2 includes the construction of a multi-lane roundabout at the intersection of SR 21/Lake Avenue and a roundabout at the intersection of 1st Street/Lake Avenue with two eastbound lanes. This alternative provides the greatest benefits in terms of capacity and safety for the proposed project. The project also includes a shared-use path on the south side of Lake Avenue to connect the Towpath Trail Lake Avenue Trailhead parking to the existing sidewalk network along Lake Avenue.

 

Prior to selecting the recommended preferred alternative, a traffic study was completed to evaluate several alternatives for improving traffic operations and safety at the closely spaced intersections. Current Project Status

Massillon was awarded $5.4M in federal funding for this project; however, additional funding will be required. The city is in the process of applying for additional funding.

 

Public input is an important part of the project development and provides valuable feedback that helps guide decision-making through all phases of development. There are two ways to view the project information. First, a second in-person open house public meeting is scheduled for June 23, 2026 from 5 to 7 pm at the Massillon Recreation Center (Community Rooms A and B) at 505 Erie Street North. The meeting will begin at 5 pm with a brief presentation and an opportunity to ask questions, followed by an open house. A second option is viewing the materials included on this link.
